Encountered the same issue. It looks like the bug comes from the hand-written toml encoder in https://github.com/mikefarah/yq/blob/master/pkg/yqlib/encoder_toml.go .

Here is another encoding bug:

echo '{
  "projects": {
    "/tmp/test": {
      "truested": true
    }
  }
}' | yq -p json -o toml .

It outputs projects = { /tmp/test = { truested = true } }. And the key /tmp/test should be quoted.

echo '{
  "projects": {
    "/tmp/test": {
      "truested": true
    }
  }
}' | yq -p json -o toml . | yq -p toml .
Error: bad file '-': invalid character at start of key: /

EDIT: The later one is already reported in #2617 in Chinese.
