Landing page events section latency

Just noticed that when you load the landing page that the Upcoming Events section takes quite a few seconds to load.

Seems fine for me. Does it happen when you disable your browser plugins?

I've noticed it a few times, pretty much exclusively at work. Could be a caching issue on GitHub's side... maybe because we've never had 2 back to back events planned in the past?

My take on what's happening....

1.Because Jekyll doesn't have the ability to render dates after today, it shows all events, which are hidden via CSS.
2. There's a little script that does the date calculation and shows the events that haven't happened yet... this is run only when the document is ready, so once all of the assets have downloaded.
3. If something is getting delayed loading, the JS script won't run... hence not seeing the items.

Probably could be resolved by removing the jQuery dependency from the script, loading the other scripts asynchronously and making sure that the event script fires right away?

I just saw the issue happen so I ran the profiler on the page.

The painting of that content is prevented until socket.io loads successfully, and returns the first message. I think this is because of this blocking line:

  document.body.appendChild(script)

My advice is to remove the slack button, or reposition it after the content.

Oh snap, you know what? That slack iframe is on the free tier of azurewebsites.net. The VM goes to sleep when there's no traffic on the free tier. So the intermittent latency is due to that.
